Possible overhaul for Victoria’s workplace laws
Victoria is considering whether to ditch its workplace compensation laws.
Melbourne newspaper The Age reported a leaked draft of a Government review of the laws that oversee WorkCover. It makes recommendations to effectively reshape Victoria’s scheme, at a potential cost of $150 million.
The author of the report, Peter Hanks QC, says the current system is “overly complex” and the Accident Compensation Act and the Accident Compensation (WorkCover Insurance) Act should be merged.
He says some provisions in the current laws are obsolete and cites anomalies and inconsistencies that he says frustrate application of the laws.
WorkCover Minister Tim Holding commissioned a review of Victoria’s Accident Compensation Act and associated legislation in December with a view to updating and streamlining the legislation.
The draft review is now before a “stakeholder reference group” made up of representatives of unions, employer groups, and legal associations.
A final version of the report is due to be released later this year.
