Older WA workers get access to compensation
WA’s ageing workforce participants a can now access worker’s compensation under new reforms abolishing age limits.
Legislative amendments introduced to Parliament last Thursday have moved to change the existing agreement which limits workers aged 64 and over to only one year of income payments in the case of job-related injuries or illness.
Finance Minister Simon O’Brien says the changes will address a “clear inequity” for older workers and have a positive impact on the economy.
“The state has an ageing workforce, low unemployment and a need to maintain a skilled and experienced workforce,” he said.
“We want to encourage older workers to remain at work and the compensation scheme should support this.”
The new legislation also allows for measures to ensure injured workers have a common law remedy if their employer is uninsured.
