NZ ACC begins probe after reports of exec conduct ‘issues’

New Zealand’s Accident Compensation Corporation has ordered an independent review of its workplace culture following allegations about some senior executives’ behaviour.

“Issues of this nature are potentially serious,” the review’s terms of reference say. “The purpose of the independent culture review … is to provide assurance as to whether ACC meets good practice for providing a positive, inclusive and safe workplace.

“The review will also consider whether ACC has robust systems, practices and processes for responding to staff concerns about inappropriate conduct and behaviour.”

Business management consultant RDC Group’s director Doug Craig and law firm Simpson Grierson’s chair and partner Pip Muir will conduct the review.

They will provide a final report by June 2 after an interim report next month.

The terms of reference say ACC Minister Scott Simpson wrote to the board this month setting out his expectations on workplace culture. “This letter of expectation included providing appropriate and confidential ways for staff to share concerns about inappropriate conduct and behaviour, and ensuring that these concerns were properly considered.”

The review will not investigate individual complaints. If allegations are made that require a separate employment investigation, the reviewers may refer the matter to the ACC chair.
