NSW to reform fire certification system
The NSW Government is to overhaul its building certification system in response to a damning report.
A review of the Building Professionals Act 2005 found the legislation is failing to meet its objectives.
Minister for Innovation and Better Regulation Victor Dominello says the Government will support 72 of the review’s recommendations.
Fire safety reforms will be prioritised, including consulting on additional inspections during and after construction, and tighter controls on who performs certain fire safety roles.
“Certifiers play a critical role in the building process and these reforms will ensure safety and confidence in the system,” Mr Dominello said.
Complaints and disciplinary processes around certifiers will be strengthened, with greater oversight and improved responsiveness to community complaints.
The Fire Protection Association Australia has welcomed the proposals.
“These are once-in-a-generation changes, which are long overdue,” CEO Scott Williams said.
“We have advocated for many years, through multiple government reviews, submissions and industry forums, that an overhaul of the approach to fire safety in NSW was needed.
“This response by the NSW Government is a clear signal to other states and territories that the community values and expects fire safety to be delivered in a competent manner.”
A draft bill for public feedback will be released in the first half of next year.
