NSW tables ban on ‘abhorrent’ claims farming

The NSW government has taken another step towards introducing a ban on claims farming.

Attorney-General Michael Daley tabled the Claim Farming Practices Prohibition Bill 2025 in state parliament last week.

“It’s abhorrent that individuals and organisations are seeking to profit off vulnerable people such as victim-survivors of child sexual abuse,” he said.

“The NSW government is listening to advocates who have called for a ban on this predatory and exploitative practice that worsens the trauma experienced by victim-survivors.

“We have carefully consulted with the community and are moving to stop the harm inflicted by this egregious behaviour.”

The bill will prohibit soliciting people to make claims, and buying or selling claims referrals. It will stop lawyers who are convicted of the offences from charging in relation to claims, and will require them to refund any payments already received.
