New construction watchdog aims to build on ‘momentum shift’
NSW’s new building commissioner says further reforms are a priority as he begins his tenure.
James Sherrard, who replaces David Chandler at Building Commission NSW, says he will focus on consumer protection and industry compliance while delivering on the 2029 National Housing Accord construction target.
And he points to the regulator’s recent concrete quality blitz – which found defects in 12 buildings across Sydney, Newcastle, Central Coast and Wollongong – as an example of the work needed to ensure standards are met.
He also says education is essential and he will support schemes that set expectations on “what good looks like”.
“I look forward to leading the dedicated and passionate Building Commission NSW team as we all push the construction industry to be better, build quality homes and take compliance seriously,” Mr Sherrard said. “Building Commission NSW was set the challenge to lift industry standards, and momentum is already shifting.”
State Building Minister Anoulack Chanthivong says the commission “is in safe hands”.
“Commissioner Sherrard has all the tools and experience to make a lasting effect on NSW’s construction landscape, and I have no doubt he will continue to raise the bar for the industry and restore public confidence,” he said.
Mr Sherrard most recently served as Transport NSW head of commercial, performance and strategy.
