Insurer wants action on mobile phone drivers

Personal lines insurer Budget Direct wants insurers to raise the premiums of vehicle owners convicted of using mobile phones while driving.

Citing research that found up to 60% of Australians use a mobile phone while driving, the Queensland-based insurer says drivers convicted of the offence should be charged more at renewal.

The Monash University study estimates at least 12% of Australian drivers have texted while driving.

“Text messaging while driving is a dangerous and risky habit and is beginning to be seen in the same light as drink-driving,” Director of Operations James Lilley said.

“Our industry, the medical profession and police should be looking at how we can further encourage lawmakers to crack down on this reckless behaviour.”

The issue has also raised concern in NZ, where authorities have expressed concern at the number of accidents involving the use of mobile phones.

Driver use of mobile phones is not illegal under NZ law, but the legislation is under review by the Transport Ministry.
