Injury scheme motor accident standards agreed

States and territories have agreed on minimum criteria for motor vehicle accident compensation programs under the new National Injury Insurance Scheme.

“Support will be provided on a no-fault basis, significantly reducing legal disputes so catastrophically injured people will benefit from early access to medical and disability care,” a Federal Treasury statement says.

The scheme will cover four accident classes: motor vehicle, medical, workplace and in the home or community.

The motor vehicle accident standards will be introduced with DisabilityCare Australia in each region.

The Federal Government is still working on standards for other classes with the states and territories.

The National Injury Insurance Scheme builds on current accident compensation schemes to complement DisabilityCare, and aims to meet the lifetime care and support needs of all people who suffer catastrophic injuries.
