icare key executive departs, results set for scrutiny
NSW state insurer icare is searching for a Group Executive, Personal Injury following Beth Uehling’s departure, as the organisation braces for further scrutiny.
icare says Ms Uehling is leaving “to take up the next opportunity in her career” and a recruitment process will start immediately for a collaborative leader with strong worker’ insurance experience.
“In the interim, icare Group Executive Rob Craig will oversee Personal Injury,” it said on Friday. “Mr Craig is a highly experienced leader with a strong knowledge of icare and insurance.”
icare is also searching for a new CEO following the departure of John Nagle early last month amid intense scrutiny over the insurer’s performance and his approach to potential conflicts of interest.
Interim CEO Don Ferguson has acknowledged the “turbulent time icare is going through” and says management is committed to finding solutions to improve the organisation.
State Insurance Regulatory Authority (SIRA) CEO Carmel Donnelly told a NSW parliamentary inquiry recently that she had advised Mr Ferguson there would be close scrutiny of the Nominal Insurer scheme’s June valuation and financial performance.
That includes a risk review by Ernst & Young and involvement by actuaries who do peer reviews in workers' compensation.
Ms Donnelly said she has also informed Mr Ferguson there will be an audit of the use of the workers' compensation insurance fund by the nominal insurer “in order to assess compliance” with legislation.
“We have a number of investigations on foot that have raised issues, and so we are going to do a thorough independent audit,” she said.
The parliamentary committee will hold its next hearings into the workers’ compensation scheme on Wednesday, with the schedule still being determined.
