Government to require reversing technology in new vehicles
The Federal Government will mandate reversing technologies in all new vehicle models from November 1, 2025.
The changes to the Australian Design Rules (ADR) will require new models – for all types of vehicles – to have a reversing camera and sensors installed as the Government enforces a push towards “life-saving technology”.
“Reversing technologies, which include reversing cameras and motion sensors, increase driver awareness of vulnerable road users behind a vehicle,” Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Carol Brown said.
“Mandating this life-saving technology will reduce the devastating impact of reverse-crash road trauma, particularly for pedestrians – which are Australia’s largest single road user group and have no protection against vehicle impact.”
The ADR changes will also require all new vehicles of existing models to incorporate the technology by November 1, 2027.
RAA’s Mobile Technology Specialist Mark Borlace says the initiative “couldn’t come any sooner,” and that the new technologies will help provide motorists with optimal visibility to avoid devastating reverse-crash incidents.
“Any measure that can help curb the spiralling number of lives lost on our roads in the future is wholeheartedly welcomed,” Mr Borlace said.
“RAA has long advocated for reversing aids in cars as they have a proven track record of enhancing driver visibility by minimising blind spots while reversing.
“This significant step forward for vehicle safety has the potential to substantially reduce injuries, fatalities, and long-term emotional toll on affected families.”
