Global regulation drawing closer
More countries are beginning to look seriously at the push for global uniformity in financial services regulation. One such country, New Zealand, has a “low impact” regulatory regime that many insurance industry insiders believe may be reformed to fall into line with Australia’s new laws. NZ representatives were at the eighth annual International Association of Insurance Supervisors conference in the old German capital of Bonn.
Discussions centred on ways to integrate regulations in a rapidly globalising financial services sector. ICA Executive Director Alan Mason chaired one of the conference sessions.
Specialist panels addressed a range of global issues relating to the management of insurance companies and other issues such as health insurance, reinsurance and motor liability.
The conference was followed by a general meeting, introducing new papers on improving supervision at both domestic and international levels.
