Frydenberg to address ICA seminar
The industry will get its first indication of how new Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg views insurance on February 27 at the Insurance Council of Australia’s (ICA) regulatory seminar.
Mr Frydenberg will be the keynote speaker at the event in Sydney.
He was appointed to the job just before Christmas, replacing Arthur Sinodinos, who quit the frontbench earlier that month.
Senator Sinodinos was stood down for most of last year while the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption investigated a company he chaired.
The role was filled temporarily by Finance Minister Mathias Cormann.
In his first month in the job Mr Frydenberg has nominated tax reform as a key area he will address and suggested the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) should get the power to ban products.
The Financial System Inquiry recommended ASIC have greater powers to act on products it considers will disadvantage consumers.
Mr Frydenberg, considered one of the Government’s rising stars, has also signalled he will address superannuation and tax, but has so far made no direct comments about general insurance.
