Fire-hit towns receive disaster funding

Two remote south Queensland towns hit by bushfires last week have been offered disaster assistance.

Fires struck Dirranbandi and Hebel, on the border with NSW, on Tuesday. Hundreds of people were evacuated to St George after the blaze jumped a major highway, and several power lines were destroyed.

Balonne Shire Council will receive support for incident management, establishment of evacuation centres and reconstruction of essential assets under the Commonwealth and state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.

“We’re committed to helping Dirranbandi and Hebel get back on their feet following these bushfires,” federal Emergency Management Minister Jenny McAllister said.

“It has been an incredibly difficult time for residents and I want to acknowledge the brave work of first responders and community members.”

Personal hardship assistance of $180 for individuals and up to $900 for a family of five or more is available for food, clothing and medicine.

Queensland Disaster Recovery Minister Ann Leahy says Balonne Shire’s response has been exceptional.

“From battling the blaze to establishing fire breaks and evacuating where necessary, the response in Dirranbandi and Hebel has been lifesaving and I thank all involved,” she said.
