Federal funds for disaster mitigation

Australian states and territories will receive $18.6 million in natural disaster mitigation funding from the Federal Government this year.

Projects to receive funding include structural works such as flood levees and firebreaks, investment in disaster-resilient infrastructure and the development of emergency management plans.

Based on submissions received last financial year, NSW will get $6 million, followed by Queensland ($5.3 million), WA ($2.1 million), SA ($1.4 million, Victoria ($1.4 million), Tasmania ($883,000), the NT ($697,000) and ACT ($605,000).

Quoting a 2007 Council of Australian Governments figure, Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland says natural disasters cause more than $1 billion damage each year to homes, businesses and infrastructure.

A spokesman for Mr McClelland told insuranceNEWS.com.au it is up to the states and territories to decide how they develop natural disaster mitigation projects and whether or not they seek consultation with groups such as the insurance industry.
