Ex-NSW WorkCover chairman takes over in SA
WorkCover SA has appointed former NSW WorkCover chairman Greg McCarthy as its new CEO.
He replaces Rob Thomson, who resigned for personal reasons in September after two years in the role.
“Greg has a good understanding of schemes across the country, including the SA scheme,” WorkCover SA Chairman Philip Bentley said.
“He also comes with a very good reputation within the industry of working with stakeholders including employer associations, unions and governments.”
Mr McCarthy was NSW WorkCover chairman for eight years until February this year, when he resigned along with the CEO amid state government plans to fast-track agency reforms.
He has more than 25 years’ experience in insurance and has been involved with workers’ compensation and rehabilitation for the past 16 years.
Mr McCarthy will drive major reforms at WorkCover SA, including an experience rating system for medium and large employers, according to Mr Bentley.
WorkCover SA, which recorded a $437 million loss in 2011/12, currently has the lowest return-to-work rate of all states, at 77%.
