Chris Black appointed Earthquake Commission Chairman
Chris Black, who recently retired as CEO of New Zealand rural insurer Farmers’ Mutual Group, has been appointed chairman of the Earthquake Commission (EQC).
Mr Black, also a past president of the Insurance Council of New Zealand, will take over the role from Mary-Jane Daly at the start of July as the insurer continues to make changes following an inquiry into its performance in the wake of the Christchurch earthquakes.
Minister Responsible for the Earthquake Commission David Clark says Mr Black brings 25 years board and executive experience, with a strong track record in insurance, banking and investment management.
“I’m pleased to be able to appoint someone with Chris’ pedigree to the role of chair at this pivotal time for EQC,” he said.
“Considerable progress has been made with 49 of the 70 recommendations outlined in Dame Silvia Cartwright’s Public Inquiry now completed. As part of this, a strong relationship with private insurers to streamline claims management has been built.”
Mr Clark also said that former Christchurch MP Ruth Dyson has been appointed Deputy Chairman.
The Natural Hazards Insurance Bill, which introduces a number of reforms, is before the New Zealand Parliament. EQC’s name will change to Toka tū Ake – Natural Hazards Commission to reflect the insurer’s broader mandate.
