Chalmers named Shadow Financial Services Minister

Jim Chalmers has been appointed to the ALP’s shadow ministry, taking up the financial services and superannuation portfolios.

Dr Chalmers told insuranceNEWS.com.au he looks forward to working with the insurance sector on “some very important issues”.

“I’ve already been meeting with a number of key players in the industry, including peak groups and individual companies, and I thank them for their insights,” he said.

“I’m conscious that there are a range of complex issues on the table at the moment, so I’m taking the time to consult and listen.”

Dr Chalmers says his priorities are understanding the Northern Australia Insurance Premiums Taskforce, plus recent developments in life insurance.

“There are some very exciting medium-term issues to think about as well, including how our insurance sector takes advantage of opportunities in the region and how we ensure we have the best-educated graduates to work in the industry.”

Dr Chalmers was an adviser to former Treasurer Wayne Swan from 2007-10, and was also his chief of staff for three years. He is also shadow minister for productivity and sport.

The Insurance Council of Australia says it is pleased with Dr Chalmers’ appointment, given his experience on House of Representative standing committees examining tax and revenue, and economics.

CEO Rob Whelan says Dr Chalmers’ “impressive academic and career track record” augers well for his ability to contribute to policy debate.

“At a time when tax reform is urgently needed to boost Australia’s productive capacity and meet future spending challenges, this experience will be highly useful,” Mr Whelan said.
