Canberra allocates more disaster funding
Federal Justice Minister Michael Keenan has announced $3.7 million of funding for 22 projects to improve natural disaster resilience.
The money will be provided under the National Emergency Management Projects program for this financial year.
Mr Keenan says Geoscience Australia will receive $250,000 to develop satellite technology to provide updates on bushfire hotspots every 10 minutes.
“Currently these images are only available every six hours,” he said.
Queensland Farmers’ Federation will receive $257,000 to develop tools to help the agricultural industry better manage the impact of natural disasters.
Mr Keenan has also announced $904,000 of funding over three years to help reduce bushfire risk in WA, under the National Bushfire Mitigation Program.
The funds will be allocated through a grants scheme, aiding projects such as the installation of firebreaks, prescribed burning and awareness campaigns.
The grants program is administered by the state Department of Fire and Emergency Services.
