ARPC reveals Sydney siege claims cost

Losses of $1.2 million from 56 claims have been reported to the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC) in relation to last year’s Martin Place siege.

Man Haron Monis held staff and customers hostage at the Lindt Café in Sydney CBD on December 18, resulting in the deaths of venue manager Tori Johnson, lawyer Katrina Dawson and Monis.

The Federal Government classified the siege as a terrorist event, meaning insurers are obliged to submit their eligible losses to the ARPC.

The losses are expected to be well below insurers’ retentions, but the ARPC must be notified, because it is required to report losses to the Government.

ARPC CEO Christopher Wallace told insuranceNEWS.com.au eight insurers were affected and most claims related to prevention of access within the exclusion zone.
