ACT chooses new CTP scheme
A citizens’ jury tasked with picking a new compulsory third party scheme for the ACT has chosen a model that covers all regardless of who is negligent.
Under the current scheme, cover is available only to injured people who can prove they are not at fault in a motor vehicle accident.
In the new program, access to treatment, domestic care and income replacement for up to five years, along with quality of life and death benefits, are available under a defined benefits scheme.
“The proposed model… provides early access to medical treatment and economic support without having to establish fault,” the citizens’ jury report says.
“This relieves the burden on injured parties and other stakeholders.
“Those most seriously injured, who can prove they are not at fault, are still able to pursue a common law claim for further support.”
The report says the model, one of four under consideration, offers the greatest projected premium savings and is equal to or more efficient than the other three suggestions.
The model cuts compensation by $16 million a year but will expand the number of people covered by two-thirds.
