$79 million in kitty for disaster plan

The Federal Government has committed $79.3 million to strengthen efforts to prepare for and deal with major natural disasters.

The “Disaster Relief Australia” package will integrate a number of existing emergency management grant programs, including the Bushfire Mitigation Program, Natural Disaster Mitigation Program, and the National Emergency Volunteer Support Fund.

The money is intended to support disaster mitigation works such as flood levees and firebreaks, support emergency management volunteers, assist local governments and foster partnerships between community groups and business to improve local response efforts.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland says $12.8 million will be invested over the next four years to assist states and territories to lease fire-fighting aircraft for longer periods during bushfire seasons.

In line with the 2008 Homeland and Border Security Review, the Federal Government will establish new briefing facilities and an enhanced government co-ordination centre to support responses in the event of a national crisis or major natural disaster.
