Youpla collapse affects 'minimum' 20,000 people
The collapse of funeral insurer Youpla, which targeted First Nations communities, has affected a minimum 20,000 people across Australia, the Save Sorry Business Coalition says.
Data from the liquidators shows the total includes nearly 10,000 from Queensland, more than 8000 from NSW and over 1000 from Victoria. All states and territories were affected.
“The collapse of the predatory funeral fund Youpla is having a devastating cultural and financial impact on First Nations communities across Australia,” Mob Strong Debt Help Aboriginal Financial Counsellor Bettina Cooper said.
The Queensland town of Yarrabah was the most targeted postcode in Australia, with 786 people affected in a town with 525 homes.
The Save Sorry Business coalition says the new Federal Government should show its commitment to improving the wellbeing of First Nation peoples and compensate current and former customers of Youpla, which was also known as the Aboriginal Community Benefit Fund (ACBF).
Four ACBF funds have been placed into liquidation, leaving policyholders unable to meet costs and without the ability to recover premiums paid.
“People who were doing the right thing by their families have been devastated by a predatory and despicable company,” Ms Cooper said. “Federal government action will help prevent further intergenerational harm and debt.”
