WA’s March storm claims still being settled

A shortage of tradesmen in Perth means WA insurers are still trying to get on top of repairs resulting from March’s hailstorm.

SGIO had more than 21,000 claims for damage to cars and homes from the March 22 storm. A spokesman told insuranceNEWS.com.au about 90% of motor vehicle claims and more than 3800 total loss car claims have been settled.

“More than 50% of our home claims have been finalised,” he said.

A spokesman for RAC-WA told insuranceNEWS.com.au insurers aren’t finding it difficult to process claims, but they are experiencing problems finding people to repair the cars and buildings.

Dealing with the numerous dents in car bodies needs specialist tools and techniques rather than more traditional panel-beating. This has added to delays in completing claims.

“SGIO has assessors on site – including employees from interstate – to manage the next steps in the repair or settlement process,” he said.

“Our assessors have prioritised customers’ homes most severely impacted by the storm, and they will continue to liaise with builders and suppliers to facilitate the repair process.”

The spokesman says that due to the scale of the disaster, SGIO estimates it will be “some time” before all claims are finalised.
