WA fires under control after 86 homes lost
A WA bushfire that destroyed 86 homes near Perth and caused insurance losses of more than $40 million was brought under control at the weekend.
“The mammoth blaze we have been fighting to contain has finally been downgraded to a Bushfire Advice,” the Department of Fire and Emergency Services said.
“This has been an incredibly complex incident with over 800 emergency services personnel and firefighters from several different services working together each day to protect lives.”
The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) last week declared a catastrophe for the fires, which caused extensive damage to homes, sheds and fences north-east of the city. More than 270 claims have been received.
“The declaration of a catastrophe means claims from these bushfires will be prioritised by insurers, who will be focusing on reducing the immense emotional and financial stress experienced by residents, farmers and businesses,” ICA CEO Andrew Hall said.
The catastrophe declaration is the first for this year and the first since the Southeast Queensland hailstorms at the end of October.
The Wooroloo fire burnt more than 10,000 hectares after it was first reported on Monday last week.
The Australian Financial Complaints Authority says it has also activated its significant event response plan, assisting early communication and expediting related processes.
