WA coast spared worst as Lincoln blows over

Former Cyclone Lincoln crossed the WA coast near Carnarvon on Saturday night as a tropical low, after failing to intensify and bring the wild weather expected.

The system was forecast late last week to reintensify and reach category 2 strength off the WA coast, leading to warnings of destructive winds and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.

But Lincoln, which became a cyclone in the Gulf of Carpentaria on February 16 before weakening over land, continued at tropical low strength.

Carnarvon received 78.4mm of rain in the 24 hours to 9am on Sunday, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing severe weather warnings and flood watches.

The system continued to track south-southeast over western parts of the Gascoyne and adjacent parts of WA’s Central West district yesterday.
