WA acts to fix burst pipe problems
The WA government has moved to address building disputes over leaking pipes, which insurers have flagged as a growing concern.
Recently passed legislation extends the time limit for making a complaint about Pro-fit Typlex 1050 pipes from six years to 15 years, backdated to when the regulated building service involving the pipes made by Iplex was completed.
The state has also finalised an industry response agreement with Iplex and participating builders to fix the defective pipes.
The government says the agreement provides a “practical and proportionate” remediation program based on the number of Typlex 1050 leaks at a home.
It is contributing $30 million for the remediation program, with the remaining amount provided by Iplex and participating builders.
Builders can now access the fund to fix Typlex 1050 pipes in homes they completed or renovated.
Homeowners whose builder is not participating in the fund can pursue a remedy by lodging a complaint with the Building Commission.
“Through the finalised agreement and important legislation changes, all homeowners can be reassured that the issue will be addressed in a co-ordinated way at no cost to them through either the industry response or a building complaint,” Commerce Minister Sue Ellery said.
