Severe storms that hit parts of regional Victoria and Melbourne on December 19 caused insured losses of $378 million.

The Insurance Council of Australia declared a catastrophe after large hailstones and heavy rain caused vehicle and other property damage, and localised flooding.

There have been more than 49,000 domestic claims and 6000 commercial claims.
