Victoria bushfires destroy 47 properties

Last week’s bushfires in regional Victoria have destroyed 47 properties, the state’s emergency services said in an update today.

The destroyed structures – 46 homes and one business – are mainly in the town of Pomonal, near the Grampians National Park.

“Initial assessments have been completed. We don’t anticipate the number to change significantly,” a spokesperson told insuranceNEWS.com.au this morning.

The revised number is up significantly from last week’s preliminary estimate of 25. The fires are the worst to hit Victoria so far this summer.

Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) CEO Andrew Hall says insurers are closely monitoring the bushfire situation in Victoria.

The VicEmergency website’s current advisory for Pomonal and neighbouring areas is a “stay informed” alert issued 18 hours ago. “There is currently no threat to you, but you should stay informed and plan for what you will do if the situation changes,” the advisory says.
