Two years on, most Victorian bushfire claims settled
Today is the second anniversary of Victoria’s Black Saturday bushfires, and all but a few of the 10,280 claims that resulted have been settled.
In a new report issued last week the Victorian Bushfire Reconstruction and Recovery Commission says most claims were settled in 2009, although 110 cases were referred to the Insurance Ombudsman Service for direction.
The service dealt with 18 formal disputes and all have now been settled.
The fires on February 7 2009 killed 173 people and injured 414, destroyed more than 2000 houses and damaged thousands more. Claims from the bushfires totalled $1.1 billion.
The commission says underinsurance and non-insurance has stopped some rebuilding in the affected areas. It says the insurance industry should improve its communications with clients about these issues.
