Two more Victorian buildings found with flammable cladding
The Victorian Building Authority (VBA) has identified two more buildings using the same flammable cladding that contributed to a Melbourne Docklands blaze in November.
The VBA compelled builder LU Simon to give information on other projects where it used the aluminium composite cladding Alucobest, which was imported from China and not tested to Australian standards.
Alucobest was also used at the Aura on Flinders apartments in the Melbourne CBD and Mitcham Village Apartments in suburban Mitcham.
The municipal building surveyors for the cities of Melbourne and Whitehorse inspected the buildings and advised that use of the product “has not compromised their continued safe occupation”.
The cladding enabled November’s blaze at the Lacrosse apartments to race up to the 21st floor from an eighth-floor balcony, where it had been sparked by a cigarette.
The VBA launched an investigation into the Lacrosse building, and is also trying to identify other buildings using non-compliant external cladding.
As previously reported by insuranceNEWS.com.au, the Fire Protection Association has called on insurance companies to help drive up building standards by being more rigorous in selecting the risks they take on.
