Thieves revved up over motorcycles
Vehicle thefts in Australia fell 13% to just over 88,000 for 2003/04, but motorcycle theft is on the rise. The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council reports that motorcycle thefts were up 8% for the year. In the June quarter alone almost 1500 motorcycles were stolen.
Just over 20,000 vehicle thefts were reported in the June quarter – a reduction of 12% on the previous quarter.
The models that are stolen most are Holden Commodore VL, VN and VK, and Ford Falcon XF and EAII. The average claim cost was $9080.
