Thieves develop a taste for motor scooters
Motor scooters are in fashion with thieves, according to the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC).
The council says motor scooters account for 85% of the top three motorcycle brands that have experienced an increase in theft since 2005.
The good news is that 64% of stolen scooters are recovered – double the recovery rate of motorcycles.
Motorcycle theft has increased 34% over the past five years in Australia, while passenger/light commercial vehicle theft has dropped by 36%.
Motor scooters and motorcycles are most commonly stolen on Fridays and Saturdays between 4pm and midnight.
