Taskforce: Mackay homes repaired by Christmas
Residents of more than 4000 flood-damaged homes in Mackay have been told their homes will be habitable by Christmas.
The Mackay Flood Recovery Task Force announced the goal at its first meeting last week.
The Task Force comprises executives from Suncorp, RACQ, NRMA, IAG, CGU and ICA. Queensland Government officials are also involved.
State Public Works and Housing Minister Robert Schwarten concedes it is an ambitious target that relies on the co-operation of the task force, insurance companies and government departments.
Mackay was swamped on February 15 when 624mm of rain fell in 10 hours. The city has average annual rainfall of 1581mm.
According to approximate figures from ICA, there have been at least 12,500 claims at a cost of $163 million. But insurers say the final tally is likely to be well in excess of that figure.
