Suncorp reassures bushfire victims

Anger over delays in cleaning up properties burned in last month’s NSW Blue Mountains bushfires has prompted Suncorp to assure policyholders they are covered for clean-ups.

The insurer has issued a statement telling AAMI, GIO and Apia customers their policies provide for the clean-up of material, which means customers are not eligible for funding under a government assistance package.

Some residents have been asked to sign waivers releasing the NSW Public Works Department and “the insurance company” from all damages and liability arising from removal work.

Suncorp Personal Insurance spokesman David Skapinker says clearing sites can be difficult and dangerous, and Suncorp is working with the authorities to ensure it is done safely and meets legal requirements.

About 200 home were lost in the fires.
