Suncorp hits back

Suncorp subsidiary GIO has demanded a retraction and an apology from the Nine Network’s “A Current Affair”, claiming a report on a motor insurance customer on February 5 was “deliberate misrepresentation”.

GIO GM Communications, Investor and Government Relations Steve Johnston says he provided the report’s producer with information the day before the program was shown disproving GIO customer Karly Victorsen’s claim that her policy had been cancelled without notification because she had missed one premium payment.

He says the producer agreed the information changed the nature of the story and asked GIO to email a statement, which was emailed to the producer but “was not used as discussed”.

Nevertheless, GIO says the program deliberately applied a misleading approach in its coverage by stating: “(GIO) has used a technicality to avoid parting with its cash”.

Mr Johnston says GIO was not given a chance to comment on the follow-up report broadcast on February 6 and has asked for a retraction and an apology.

He’s still waiting for a response.
