Suncorp cyclone claims reach $85 million

Suncorp Metway has received more then 5800 insurance claims since the devastation wrought by Cyclone Larry, and the total in losses is expected to be about $85 million.

The company doesn’t expect many more claims for homes, motor and commercial property, and CEO John Mulcahy says the immediate focus is to get customers back on their feet.

“The work Suncorp is doing now is to help people rebuild their lives by processing insurance claims quickly.”

The company flew in a team of 60 staff, including 38 assessors, to begin the claims process soon after the cyclone struck. It also helped with short-term financial relief packages and enlisting trades people to start on the rebuilding.

The Insurance Disaster Response Organisation has recorded 18,000 insurance claims in the affected area, and the estimated total cost is $350 million.
