Suncorp completes most Debbie claims

Suncorp has finalised three-quarters of the claims it received after Cyclone Debbie caused extensive property damage in Queensland and NSW.

CEO Insurance Anthony Day says improved systems and processes have allowed Suncorp to resolve home claims faster than after previous major cyclones, including Yasi and Marcia.

“Cyclone Debbie was one of the most powerful storm systems in the past decade,” he said. “It impacted communities stretched across more than 1000km in two states.

“Despite the scale of this weather event, Suncorp’s claims team has resolved an average of 80 claims per day over the past six months.”

Suncorp received 19,424 claims, including 16,146 home claims and 1812 motor claims. Commercial property and motor claims totalled 1466.

About 4000 home repair jobs are completed and 1500 are under way. More than 11,500 customers have received cash settlements to replace contents or manage their own repairs.

Mr Day says the company is working to finalise remaining claims as soon as possible.

“It typically takes up to 12 months to resolve all claims following such a large and severe weather event,” Mr Day said. “We understand this is a difficult time for our customers and we are committed to getting people’s lives back on track quickly.”
