Stormy Canberra stings insurers for $25 million
Canberra residents have filed more than $25 million in storm-related claims so far this year, with that number to rise once a figure is placed on the damage caused by last week’s downpour.
The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says claims from last Tuesday’s drenching could run into the millions of dollars.
The ACT’s biggest insurer, NRMA, received more than 400 claims just a day after the rainstorm, in addition to another 2100 claims from the capital’s New Year’s Eve storm and 400 from another storm on February 10.
NRMA still has to sort through more than 800 claims, blaming the delays on a shortage of assessors and tradespeople.
The company has flown in loss adjusters from Sydney and Adelaide to sift through claims, while tradesmen from Sydney, Wollongong, and parts of Victoria and Queensland have also been brought in.
