Storm claims top $1.5 billion

Insurance claims from the wild storms in Perth and Melbourne last month have topped $1.5 billion following a rash of new claims in WA.

Insurers in Perth have received about 89,000 claims following the March 22 storm, with estimated insured losses of $650 million. Statistics for Perth held by the Insurance Council of Australia have now climbed more than $400 million in little over a week.

The Melbourne storm on March 6 has resulted in 106,000 claims with estimated insured losses of $890 million.

In Queensland, claims have now slowed in the wake of Cyclone Ului, which whipped through the Whitsundays and Queensland central coast last month.

Suncorp maintains a previous figure of 2500 claims, while customers of Allianz Australia and Club Marine have submitted 300 claims with insured losses of around $3.7 million.
