Sports drugs inquiry raises risk management concerns

Sporting code executives are reviewing their risk management procedures after the Australian Crime Commission (ACC) revealed illicit drug-taking is widespread in some professional competitions.

Sportscover CEO David Lamb says clients have called in response to the ACC’s investigation and its impact on the Australian Football League and National Rugby League.

Although the inquiry focused on professional sport, managers across various codes are seeking advice on providing education, guidance and support to officials and players, he says.

“We have some experience in that area so we are certainly working with clients and brokers to make sure they can risk-manage these issues,” Mr Lamb told insuranceNEWS.com.au.

Club executives wonder whether officials are providing appropriate guidance to players and want to know how to help athletes make smart choices.

Although the investigation has caused concern across codes, no one knows whether the drug use extends to amateur sports, Mr Lamb says.

The ACC’s report followed a 12-month inquiry that found links with organised crime and the widespread use of banned drugs in some professional sports.
