Smash repair industry seeks feedback on revamped code
Consultation will start next month on proposed changes to the Motor Vehicle Insurance and Repair Industry Code of Conduct.
The Code Administration Committee says it will take feedback on the revised rules and standards over eight weeks. Consultation materials including a summary of the code review, the draft code, draft constitution and committee charter will be made available online.
The committee says stakeholders will be asked to comment on the draft code, answering questions on matters identified as requiring further industry input.
The voluntary code is overseen by the Insurance Council of Australia and the Motor Trades Association of Australia. It launched in 2006 and was last revised in 2017.
The consultation follows an independent review of the code by Michael Schaper, who made 15 recommendations in 2023 aimed at improving governance and consumer outcomes.
One recommendation, for the Code Administration Committee to incorporate as a legal entity, will be actioned.
“Following legal advice and consideration of the best interests of the industry, the MTAA, ICA and the [code committee] have determined that incorporating as an independent association is an important first step towards its modernisation,” committee chair George Manos said.
