Seasonal catastrophe losses top $3 billion

Updates last week to claims totals from the summer bushfires and hailstorms shows insured losses have now passed $3 billion.

Bushfire losses from the November-declared catastrophe have risen to $1.989 billion from around 27,000 claims as of February 24, the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says. Around 25% of home building claims have now been closed.

Losses from January hailstorms that were particularly damaging in Canberra have climbed to $805 million as of Friday. More than 87,500 claims have been received, with more than 60,000 of related to motor vehicles.

Figures were earlier last month show claims of $100 million from storms and flooding that affected Queensland and NSW.

Hailstorms in southeast Queensland caused losses in November of $166 million, while losses from smaller fires in Queensland and NSW in September and October had combined losses of $56 million.
