The sale of stolen vehicles will be increasingly difficult, according to a new report released by the National Motor Vehicle and Theft Reduction Council.

The report says that providing consumers with easy access to non-personal information about a vehicle's history could “significantly minimise the risk of them unwittingly purchasing a stolen vehicle”.

The report recommends the implementation of a new $2.5 million information service that uses the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System to exchange registration, stolen and written-off-status information nationally. The report also recommends the Register of Encumbered Vehicles network could be used as the “shop front” for public access.
