Rebuilding continues after Cyclone Larry

Suncorp has completed most of its assessments for home, building and contents claims received as a result of Cyclone Larry and says claims costs are still expected to be $80-85 million.

Suncorp spokesman Jamin Smith told Sunrise Exchange News the insurer is concentrating its efforts on helping customers progress with non-structural repairs and rebuilding work on their homes and businesses.

He says the Queensland Building Services Authority and General Peter Cosgrove’s recovery taskforce have set out processes to ensure construction work meets all relevant building standards in the area.

“Our team of structural engineers and builders is working hard within these processes to scope the work required for customers whose properties have structural damage,” he said.

Suncorp aims to be in contact with these customers from mid-May, notifying them in writing of the status of their claims and the steps involved in the repairs.

The insurer says each building repair claim is being allocated a case manager who will keep customers informed and updated throughout the process.

“To help our customers avoid financial difficulty, we have developed a relief package to support those who have been adversely affected by Cyclone Larry,” Mr Smith said.

“Customers can apply for suspended loan repayments, loan restructuring without the usual bank fees, and a waiver of early withdrawal fees for those wishing to withdraw from term deposits.”
