Queensland takes up industrial manslaughter

Victoria’s attempt to introduce industrial manslaughter legislation has failed, but Queensland now looks set to take up the mantle. The Beatty Government plans to introduce similar legislation in response to what employers maintain is pressure from state unions.

The new laws against “dangerous industrial conduct” are likely to be passed as early as next year. Like Victoria, the Queensland business community is not happy.

Business groups have reacted strongly, expressing concern at the likely impact on established businesses as well as those considering setting up shop in the sunshine state.

Commerce Queensland CEO Andrew Craig said the new laws will put Queensland’s competitive advantage under threat.

How much chance of success does such legislation have in Queensland? Unlike Victoria, Premier Peter Beatty doesn’t have a strong opposition to contend with. More importantly, he doesn’t have an Upper House dominated by the Opposition, either.
