Queensland flood challenge continues to mount
A lawyer acting for Queensland flood victims whose claims have been denied has signed up around 60 policyholders to challenge the findings.
Slater & Gordon Practice Group Leader Peter Long has accused the insurers involved of incorrectly classifying a genuine storm event as flood after record rainfall in southwest Queensland in March.
He is obtaining policy documents from owners of about 60 properties in Roma, Charleville and St George and estimates the final tally of claimants signing on for legal action may reach 100.
Mr Long says he can’t understand how some insurers’ hydrologists classified the event as flood, and believes the residents’ case against their insurers is “very strong”.
“Those areas got about six inches of rain in six hours,” he told insuranceNEWS.com.au on Friday. “There was nowhere for that water to go.
“I’ve had at least three different hydrologists contact me to say [the insurers involved] got it wrong, and I’m right,” he said.
He says he is yet to meet with the insurers, but hopes the matter can be resolved quickly.
Allianz Australia and Elders Insurance are among those who denied claims.
“I would hope that we can meet the insurers in Brisbane and have a robust discussion about what did happen on that day,” Mr Long said. “Hopefully [claimants] will then get paid, and not have to live with a concrete floor for the next 18 months as they wait for a court case.”
