QBE drops Canberra bushfires legal action

QBE has joined Suncorp is withdrawing from legal action against the ACT Government over the 2003 Canberra bushfires.

The insurer announced in the ACT Supreme Court last week that it would not pursue a class action on behalf of 19 insured clients, leaving just 100 claimants in the ACT Supreme Court contesting the case.

It’s not known if a settlement has been reached.

In March, Suncorp dropped its class action against the ACT Government over the 2003 bushfires after settling for an undisclosed amount. More than 400 clients represented by Suncorp will receive compensation.

NRMA Insurance withdrew from its action against the ACT Government in December, saying no settlement had been reached with the ACT or NSW governments to cover its 2000 claimants.

However, QBE will continue its quest for some $26 million in compensation against the NSW Government, which it holds accountable for the fire beginning in the Brindabella National Park.
