Pilbara agencies to receive Zelia repair funds

Government agencies have submitted almost 40 damage reports to the Insurance Commission of WA after Cyclone Zelia struck on February 14.

Most involve roof leaks, flooding and other property loss, and the commission says more reports are expected in coming weeks as assessments continue.

An insurance damage assessor was arranged for schools, hospitals, police stations and ports before the category 4 cyclone crossed the Pilbara coast.

Agencies will receive funding for repairs to community assets.

Commission CEO Rod Whithear says more than $90 billion of state assets are insured across WA.

“We are here to support the agencies and help them recover from loss or damages as quickly as possible,” he said.

Insurers do not expect large numbers of claims after the cyclone struck at the De Grey River mouth, quickly easing to a tropical low.

Port Hedland, Broome, Karratha and other population centres escaped the worst of the severe weather.

Broome Insurance Brokers director David Keys said last week that the private property fallout will be minimal.

“We’re virtually unscathed. You prepare for the worst and hope for the best and it certainly turned out that way.”
