NZ snowstorm costs $28 million
The cost of damage after a snowstorm hit the New Zealand south island region of Canterbury last month is still being tallied, but the Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ) has estimated a bill of up to $NZ35 million ($28.6 million).
Estimates after the event stood at $NZ5 million ($4.1 million) but ICNZ has revised the estimate due to further damage caused by the remaining snow. The council has also reported an increase in claims for motor accident and business interruption as a result of the lingering snow.
The NZ Government has offered emergency relief to continue the clean-up in Canterbury. The fund will be complemented by four regional offices to co-ordinate efforts.
Farmers in the area will gain most benefit from the relief effort, with funds directed to restoring enterprises and providing feed for stock.
