NZ quake damage cost rises

Damage claims from the powerful earthquake off the southwest coast of NZ on July 15 have risen to 1995, costing an estimated $NZ3.66 million ($2.93 million).

The earthquake, measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, was centred 100km northwest of the southern coastal township of Tuatapere, at a depth of 12km. Despite being felt across NZ, the average claim from the quake amounts to little more than $NZ1800 ($1443).

The final cost is expected to climb, with residents having 30 days to register damage with the Earthquake Commission.
